Tuck Yourself Into Bed

5 May 2015

Allison read What You Do Right Before Bed Determines How Productive and Focused You’ll Be Tomorrow and admired Michael Hyatt’s disciplined approach to one of the most important things people can do to get more of what they want out of life.

I write and teach about the importance of sleep. A lot. I tell people about the medical reasons for sleep and try to convince them that being rested will help them be better leaders. I explain how making better sleep hygiene choices is usually the first step. If they make better choices and still can’t sleep, I encourage them to see a doctor like my friend, Chris Winter. (He’s the sleep doctor for the San Francisco Giants who give him credit for winning three of the last five World Series.)

The right sleep hygiene choices are different for each individual. However, almost everyone I know who reports feeling rested most days has a solid nighttime ritual. Just as you go through several steps to put a child to bed, you need to have a plan for tucking yourself in, too.

Yesterday, one of my clients sent me a blog post by bestselling author, Michael Hyatt, entitled, What You Do Right Before Bed Determines How Productive and Focused You’ll Be Tomorrow. Your nighttime ritual will likely be different from Hyatt's nine-step process, but I encourage you to prioritize coming up with your own bedtime plan. In addition to being more productive and focused, I think you’ll find you feel calmer, happier, less hungry, more resilient in the face of the day’s irritations, better able to communicate, and generally more satisfied.
